John McCain's Statue of Liberty Play

Anyone remember the Fiesta Bowl in Arizona a couple of years ago that matched up Cinderella Boise State against perennial powerhouse Okalahoma?

If you don’t, here was the scenario. One team was clearly out-classed by the other team in terms of talent. That was Boise State. They breezed through the regular season as an undefeated team.

The other team had more talent, but went through a tough regular season and had a few blemishes on their record to prove it.

Well, that’s a lot like this presidential race. McCain was Boise

Greg being Greg...Again

In case you missed it El Paso’s low-rent answer to Rush Limbaugh called a frequent KHRO caller a “stupid son-of-a-bitch”, followed by “dumb ass”.

Great way to raise the political discussion guy. Way to be a professional ol’ buddy.

I spoke with KHRO Station Manager David Candelaria who told me that management had met with Freyermuth and essentially laid down the law. Greg was forced to give an on-air apology to the caller. He was also told to allow more callers to his show.

As usual, Mr. Professional himself, decided to be a smart ass rather than take the discussion to heart and learn from it. He made comments during most of his show that were sarcastic and pretty much insubordinate to Candelaria. It’ll be interesting to see how long that is tolerated by management.

Republican Convention and Looming Hurricane

I’m just wondering if the Republicans are planning to take advantage of the fact that there is a hurricane looming towards the Gulf Coast.

Think they’ll stoop to using the potential tragedy as a public relations move to garner support?

It’ll be interesting.

Paul Moreno Dishonors the Legacy of Cesar Chavez

"Never in the political process did he (Obama) mention Cesar Chavez or the plight of farmworkers.”

This is what out-going State Representative Paul Moreno had to say about Barack Obama to Sito Negron at the Democratic National Convention in a story that ran in Newspaper Tree yesterday.
Prior to that, Moreno also said, "Texas and the Southwest are deeply indebted toClinton because of the great work he did for Mexican Americans. I don’t think Obama knows anything about Mexican Americans."

I have a big problem with this criticism leveled at Obama by the so-called Conscience of the Texas Legislature. This is clearly a comment that is meant

More Thoughts on Cobos

One more thought on Judge Cobos and his CEO analogy. Following his logic as a CEO deserving such a high salary, one has to consider that such a salary would be subject to approval by his Board of Directors. If Judge Cobos really believes in this analogy, then the pay raise would more appropriately be put before his Board of Directors, namely the voters of El Paso County.

I spoke with Barbara Perez who was on the <

Speaking of the Three Stooges...

Did anyone catch Sariñana last night on ABC Xtra? The show was about the Constables and also featured Rick Gammon.

At one point Sariñana, in an apparent bid to salvage his rep, stated that he didn’t think the deputy involved in the shooting should still be on the streets.

P
retty interesting that he would not want the Deputy to enjoy due process considering Sariñana is still on the Court despite the FBI Public Corruption investigation.

(Not that I am sticking up for the Deputy either. Don’t get mad at me, I didn’t create the hypocrisy, I’m just pointing it out!)

County Commissioner’s Court Votes for Pay Raise

I guess I’ve been pretty hard on my friend Steve Ortega lately and I should lighten up. But apparently our infamous County Judge Anthony Cobos decided to take a page out of the Ortega political playbook and vote on an issue when his opposition wasn’t around. Namely, Commissioner Veronica Escobar.

As you all know, the County Commissioners Court voted to give themselves a $20,000 a year pay raise. Hell, I know people that don’t make that in a year!

Cobos himself gets a 35% pay raise.

Okay, I expect stupidity like this from Curly, Larry, and Moe (aka Cobos, Teran, and Sarinana). But Haggerty (who I guess is now Shemp)? The reason he keeps getting elected is because his constituency likes the fact that he generally holds the line on spending.

You Can't Fight City Hall

It’s a saying we’ve all heard many times. It demonstrates the idea many have that going against city hall can be a futile effort.

I now understand that frustration.

I hope, Dear Readers, that you remember these names at their next election:

Susie Byrd
Ann Morgan Lily
Steve Ortega
Beto O’rourke
&
Mayor John Cook

Because they didn’t stand up for the poor and working class of El Paso on a vote yesterday. But don’t worry, I’ll mak

A COUPLE OF PEOPLE ASKED ME IF I’D POST WHAT I SAID, SO HERE ARE THE REMARKS I PREPARED WHILE I SAT FOR MY TURN TO SPEAK. AS FOR THE EXCHANGE BETWEEN THE MAYOR AND BETO, THAT IS ON VIDEO AND I THINK YOU CAN CATCH IT AT THE CITY WEBSITE.)

City Council Meeting Notes

Aside from the fact that the Mayor, Susie Byrd, Steve Ortega, Beto O’rourke, and Ann Morgan Lily didn’t vote the way I’d hoped they would, my first in-person visit to a city council meeting was pretty interesting.

I pulled my four year old out of school an hour early just so that I could make the meeting. Good thing she’s in pre-k and they are only in class for three hours, but it was cool field trip and learned a little civics lesson.

Okay, she probably didn’t learn anything because she was bored out of her mind (me too mija, don’t worry). But she enjoyed our lunch trip to the main library, escorted of course by my good friend who works at the city. Happy Birthday, by the way. I know it’s not until tomorrow, but I’d rather do it early then tell you late.

I was pleasantly surprised about some things at city hall. First, that the seats were comfortable. Second, that the monitors and speaker system is just great and really helpful. Third, I was glad

Guns in Schools

This is a problem we’ve had since I was in high school. But back then, we were talking about guns carried in school by students.

I’m going to add this latest little beauty from Governor Perry to my Only in Texas file. Apparently the governor thinks guns in school are fine, as long as it’s the teachers who are the ones packing.

A member of the school district that decided to allow teachers to carry heat in the class room said that they had all kinds of emergency procedures, but asked what happens when the bad guys get on to campus. Thus the new rule.

Is he joking? Guns in the classroom will not make it safer.

But I guess discipline will not be a problem anymore.

I wouldn’t be su

60 Years on the Job

Council recognized the service of a mechanic (didn’t get his name) who’d been at Sun Metro for more than 60 years. His family went to be with him on his special day.

Mayor Cook said he’d been there so long that one of his first jobs was to motivate the mule to pull the trolly downtown.

It’s not everyday that you hear about people working at one place for that long and wanted to pass it on to everyone else.

Good job and enjoy your retirement.

Mayor Cook Sings the Veto Song

Mayor John Cook vetoed something for only the second time in his administration. He vetoed something put forward by Eddie Holguin that would require the PSB to reimburse the City for costs related to removing excess water around the community as a result of storm water.

You remember the PSB right? They are the geniuses that ran out of sand bags in the desert.

So we got hit with the Storm Water Tax a while back. Yeah, I said tax. You can call it a fee, but when the government is taking my money, I call it a tax. Just like you can call a six-foot rodent Mickey Mouse, but it’s still a big ass rat.

They got $40 million bucks from the tax and the City gave them $7 million

Rules Manipulated in City Council Meeting – Better Not Leave Your Seat at City Hall!

Was it legal? Yep.

Was it a cheap move and bad political karma? Hell Yes.

Did anyone even notice it? Not likely.

I like Steve Ortega. He’s not only a really nice guy, he’s a great public servant and extremely accessible. He’s helped me out with background info on a couple of blog pieces I’ve done and helped me with issues that aren’t even in his district.

But, in one of the cheapest, but entirely legal, moves I’ve seen in a long time, City Representative Steve Ortega was able to reverse a decision made by the Council on an issue dealing with the Civil Service Commission that he originally lost.

The issue at dispute was about members of the Civil Service Commission. The agenda item would ban Civil Service Comm

Jerome Tilghman on the Hunt

I saw this thread on The Strelz's Forum Message Board. Apparently Jerone is looking for frequent KHRO 1650am caller Dirty Downtown Dave, or 3D.

No reason is stated, but people have questioned the motives.

It makes you wonder if perhaps Jerome is ready to launch yet another failed campaign or maybe just wants to "facilitate the dialogue" with him about something else.

Or maybe Jerome wants to sue 3D. Maybe he's upset about 3D exposing Jerome's meetings for a charity that he talks about that never comes to fruition as being a guise to talke with people to gain support for a congressional run.

Could it be because 3D raised concerns over the manner and reason that Tilghman left the military? Or the fact taht 3D mentioned that Jerome had been suspended from his employment as a teacher as a disciplinary measure (something Jerome Tilghman admitted to publically)?

One can only wonder, but it is interesting to note that Tilghman chose to make a thread of that nature and has not answered all the people questioning is reasons for doing so. Especially given the fact that 3D was ahead of the curve in identifying some of Tilghman's faults and has been an outspoken critic.

Missing Woman: Barbara Perez

The “Bad Girl” Barbara Perez has grown on me. Maybe because it’s the fact that she follows Freyermuth, but I like her a lot more now.

Or maybe it’s because she finally told psycho-Suzie from the Northeast that it’s time to get over the whole Hillary thing.

So I am a little worried about her now. She seems to be sick a lot; more than most people. Seems like it’s almost one day per week that she’s out sick. Hope she’s okay and it’s not something serious.

Hector is a great fill-in for her and it’s good to hear him more than once a week. But KHRO 1650 has to get some stability soon. As it is, I listen way less now that they made the change to Freyermuth in the morning.

Hope you are doing well Barbara, get well soon.

Greg Freyermuth Threatens KHRO 1650am Caller

As I've written about previously, I had a little alternacation with KHRO Limbaugh knock-off Greg Freyermuth the other day that ended in him calling me a cowardly piece of crap.

(BTW Freyermuth, I got your cowardly, ese!)

Well for the second day in a row, Freyermuth lost his cool with yet another caller that was willing to stand up to him and hold him accountable, as he so loves to brag that he does.

During a heated exchance with KHRO regular caller, Thomas D. (a devout Independent), Thomas told Freyermuth that he was being hypocritical and I beleive the world liar was tossed around somewhere.

Freyermuth challenged his manhood and Thomas decided to take the bait.

I spoke directly with Thomas and he told me what happened off air. He says he politely called the station and asked for an appointment with Mr. Freyermuth. He left a message with his telephone number to set up the appointment.

Freyermuth called Thomas back and began to curse him out and ended the conversation by telling Thomas that if he came to the studio, "I'll put a bat to your head".

Now everyone reading this knows what's going to happen next. You might say it's Greg being Greg. He's going to spin the story that he w

Greg Being Greg

In case you missed it, Greg Freyermuth and I attempted to have a discussion this morning regarding blogging. I say attempting because it dissolved into a Greg completely losing it.

You see, that’s what happens when you challenge conservatives with the facts. They start off by calling you “ol’ buddy” to try to convince you that they are rational and nice people. Dare I say “folksy”. But if you give them long enough, they’ll show their true colors.

There was so much bullshit, lies, and hypocrisy in what Greg said that its difficult to really know what the hell happened in the call. Greg was commenting on how wrong it was that the Spanish Basketball Team had taken a picture where they slanted their eyes, apparently mocking Asians. That is Hall of Fame stupid and offensive.

EP Dem Chair Danny Anchondo Does it again!

I think I asked rhetorically a couple of weeks back if El Paso County Democratic Party Chair Danny Anchondo was purposely trying to screw up the Democratic Party here in town. I am becoming more and more convinced that he is.

He must be, because no one could be as bad of a County Chair as he is by accident. The latest in his string of debacles occurred last Saturday and last night. Saturday was the big kick-off for the Obama voter outreach event. Many of the party elite and senior leadership were in attendance including Senator Shapleigh, Representative Chavez, County Attorney Jose Rodriguez, etc…

But guess who didn’t show up? That’s right, Danny Anchondo. The El Paso Democratic County Chair didn’

Strip Club Ordinances for the County

Okay, I know what you are thinking. THIS GUY HAS A FASCINATION WITH STRIP CLUBS. I know, I tend to talk about them a lot, and you are right. I guess I am fascinated with how much attention they get from local government.

I almost don’t know where to start with this one, but I’ll give it a shot. First, for all the people that think you can legislate morality, you are barking up the wrong tree. You just can’t do it. As long as there are women who will take off their clothes for money, there will be men lined up to blow their paychecks. Like I’ve said before, I don’t make the rules, I just point them out.

And don’t give me this shit that women are being exploited there. They aren’t. They are big girls; they know what they are doing. Think about it, between the stripper and the customer, which one leaves the building with all the money?

Olympic Swimming Demystified - Guest Post by Big Mike

(NOTE TO READER: THIS POST WAS A RESULT OF CONVERSATION I HAD WITH MIKE A. ABOUT SWIMMING AND OLYMPIC RECORDS. TURNS OUT HE'S A SWIMMER AND EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE ON THE SUBJECT SO I ASKED HIM TO DO A GUEST PIECE. HERE IT IS, HOPE YOU LEARN SOMETHING, I KNOW I DID!)

World records at the 2008 Summer Olympics are like Government/School District tax increases in El Paso:  it seems that everyone has one, they are easy to obtain, no one complains about the way they occur, and many more will probably be issued by the end of August.  Michael Phelps is phenomenal, no doubt about it, but the guys who are finishing 2nd and 3rd behind this freak of nature are also breaking old Olympic and world records while becoming the first and second loser of these races.  Heck, did y’all see the 4x100m freestyle relay in which the French kept up wi

The Perils of Straight Ticket Voting

What I am about to say is not a popular thing and I will probably get a lot of criticism from fellow Democrats for saying it. In fact, I am somewhat torn about it.

You see, in order for my choice for President, Barack Obama, to do well in El Paso, I have to hope (no pun intended) that Hillary supporters will go to the polls in big numbers and vote for Obama.

Fat chance.

But there is a good chance that many of the Hillary supporters, who tend to be regular Democratic voters, will go to the polls and vote straight ticket Democrat. It’s a way to support Obama without feeling like they are betraying Hillary.

Even though it benefits my candidate, I have to say this. Voting straight-ticket is stupid.

Whether it’s voting straight ticket Democrat or straight ticket Republican.

I’ve always looked at straight ticket voters as a less-evolved voter. I know, I know, I’m being an elitist. So what, I’ve been called worse!

When you vote for one slate, you are voting for every candidate on the ticket, whether they deserve your vote or not. That means you vote for the best candidates, but you also vote for the less-qualified candidates as well.

Judge Don Minton, a Good Argument against Voting Straight Ticket Democrat

I am proud to say that I vote in every election. But like many of you reading this, I don’t always pay attention to the judge races. They just don’t interest me. In fact, unless you’ve ever appeared in any of the courts, it probably doesn’t matter to you either. But we all have to pay more attention to these races because they are very important.

Judge Don Minton is the presiding judge for the Criminal District Court Number 1. It’s basically a drug court and we all know how important that it is in a city that sits on the border. CDC #1 hears felony drug cases and the occasional civil case related to drug seizures.

Minton was appointed to the post by Governor Rick Perry. I know what you’re thinking, that fact alone would be a good reason to vote against Minton. But hold on a second. Minton is the best decision Perry every made (and probably the only one I agree with).

Before we talk more about Minton,

Wow, I can’t see any other host country even trying to compete with that opening ceremony for a very long time. There was just so much to see and it takes a couple of views to really take it all in. I think I was most impressed with the fact that there were so many people involved in the ceremony. I didn’t think people were physically capable of doing some of the stuff I saw!

NBC blew it the next day. There was a series of technical difficulties and it frustrated me so I changed the channel several times. It looks like they eventually got their act together and all started working well.

I find myself fascinated with women’s gymnastics. First of all, it should be called girls’ gymnastics because I don’t think there is a female in the Olympics that is over 18, so they are all girls. The Barber Shop

Local Political Signs Still Up After Election

I know there are rules governing when political campaign signs can be put up and when they need to come down.

You all know that I love to name names, the signs that I’ve seen that are still up are from Alfredo Chavez and Paul Moreno. Chavez’s signs are near my home on the Eastside.

Paul Moreno’s sign, which belong in the hall of fame for ugly political signs, are in the Buena Vista area off Paisano.

McCain's "Sex Change"

(NOTE TO READERS: THIS PIECE WAS ORIGINALLY SUPPOSED TO RUN LAST WEEK, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW I WAS HAVING TECHNICAL ISSUES AND SO I ONLY FOUND OUT TODAY THAT IT WAS POSTED AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. SORRY!)

An editorial in the Wall Street Journal by a conservative writer gave me a good laugh over the weekend. The piece is critical of McCain’s latest major political flip-flop. Since McCain is no stranger to flip-flopping, what makes this particular gaffe unique is the speed at which he flipped.

The Sunday before last, McCain told George Stephanopoulos that nothing (including a tax increase) was off the table in order to save Social Security. By last Wednesday McCain was already flippin’ and gave one of his own Read-My-Lips statement that he may one day regret.

The author of the piece says that it wasn’t a flip-flop, “it’s a sex change”. Almost spit menudo all over the place when I read the piece!

This got me to thinking, what happened to the reform

I’ve never been a fan of Morris Pittle’s tagline for marketing El Paso. I’m of the opinion that the line fails to grab attention, create interest in El Paso, or the desire to act and visit El Paso.

Pittle spent some time hosting for Lisa D. on Charlando Con La Gringa on Radio KAMA 750AM the other day.

I was really disappointed by a couple of things that he said. First was his little fit about bloggers because he’s apparently taken a few hits in the El Paso Blogosphere. Since I hadn’t written about him, until now, I blew it off.

Recall Representative Rachel Quintana

Mayor Cook chastised Representative Quintana in an open meeting earlier this week. Cook told Quintana that she was “making a fool” of herself.

RED FLAG – If our guitar-strumming sing song Mayor says you are making a fool of yourself, boy do you have problems!

But Mayor Sing Song has a point. She does make a fool of herself, though I would venture to say that “allegedly” committing a crime to save 80 bucks and then hiring Theresa Caballero as her attorney made her look like a fool a long time ago. The point is, she is a joke.

Plus she goes through help faster than Donald Trump!

Now much of what I write is sarcastic and often satirical. As Hector Montes is fond of saying, “I’m half-kidding.”

Send Irresponsible Parents to Jail

Drink, drive, go to jail.

We’ve all heard this, or a variation, about the consequences of drinking and driving.

Maybe you’ve also heard about the lady who was in an accident on Transmountain with two young children. One of the children was seriously injured because the child was not in a child safety seat. The mom of course, was not hurt. But she could be facing a fine.

Why? Clearly driving a vehicle with an unsecured child is just as irresponsible as driving while intoxicated. But there is almost no comparison in the punishment.

If you are driving while intoxicated and get pulled over are involved in an accident, you are going to jail. But being irresponsible with the life of a child gets you a fine?

C’mon, that needs to change.

Artificial Gas Prices

I get a kick of conservative pundits, especially a local one, that love to hump the leg of oil companies. As if poor old Big Oil needs to be protected. They already are, we’ve had eight years of oil tycoons in office!

But if you’re the Average Joe like me, you are probably pretty pissed off at hearing about record profits for Big Oil, while we are takin’ it up the ass at the pump! (Sorry, I know it’s crude, but can you think of a better way of describing the way you feel when you fill up?)

Conservatives always have some screwy convoluted reason for the surge in prices at the pump. But here’s something I’ve noticed. If the price of oil spikes on Wall Street can bet your ass that you will see a similar spike at the pump the next day or shortly thereafter. Conservatives defend this by saying that we live in a capitalist society and that’s the logical move of the market.

Here’s how you know that’s a steamy load of BS. Because when there is a sharp DRO

Dee Margo Bullying Campaign Contributors?

I received information from a source recently about some disturbing news about Dee Margo, Republican candidate for the state house seat vacated by Pat Haggerty.

Apparently, in an angry exchange in front of shocked bystanders at the Downtown Rotary meeting last month, Margo accosted Flip Lyle demanding to know why Lyle had contributed money to the Joe Moody Campaign. Margo was upset because Lyle had donated to his competitor and not his campaign.

I am getting reports from several eye witnesses that this same confrontation has taken place in board rooms, parties and meetings all over town (well, mostly the west side).

I guess Margo believes that anyone who knows him should give him money. Isn't he happy with the deep pockets that are already supporting him like Rick Perry, Woody Hunt and Paul Foster?

Lieberman to Speak @ Republican National Convention?

Joseph Lieberman now calls himself an “Independent Democrat”. If you ask me, it’s only so that McCain can say he has the support of a Democratic Senator.

But Joe, who I will now call Smokin’ Joe (because he must be hitting the bong pretty hard if he thinks he’s going to convince anyone that he’s anything but a DINO) is barking up the wrong tree. He hasn’t been a Democrat in a long time. And there’s nothing “Independent” about him. He’s a Republican lapdog.

He was selected to run with Al Gore because he’s conservative and brought balance to the ticket.

Given recent polling numbers, Democrats are running pretty strongly and are poised to gain even more seats in Congress. So there is a real possibility that Democrats can increase their lead in Congress.

So if that happens, will Smokin’ Joe try to run home to the D’s in an attempt to be relevant in the Senate?

Not if he goes to the Republican National Convention. There is a rumor in Washington, bolstered by his appearance on Meet the Press this Sunday, that Smokin’ Joe will give the keynote address. Smokin’ Joe hinted that he’d talk about not being Republican and Democrats and focusing on being Americans.

The Surge

So I was watching some talking heads this weekend on political shows and it got me to thinking. I am pretty sick and tired of hearing Republicans taking credit for the surge or awakening in Iraq. This initiative has worked for a variety of reasons and a lot of stuff had to go right in order to set up the environment needed for it to be a success.

The idea that it was just more troops is an over-simplistic distortion of a very complex equation. The troops wouldn’t help if it wasn’t for the fact that the clerics in Iraq, on their own, decided to lead their people the way they should.

Don’t get me wrong, having the presence of the world’s best fighting force to back their play was instrumental, but conservatives have to stop misleading the American people into believing that the presence of more troops was the ONLY reason it worked.

McCain Bimbo Ad: You Can’t Make This Stuff Up!

The political gods have a sense of humor. Last week’s ridiculously stupid attack ad on Barack Obama by John McCain featured two of America’s biggest bimbos, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

The point of the ad was to trivialize Obama and paint him as nothing more than a superficial celebrity. Many, even in the Republican Party, questioned why a guy as old as McCain decided to go so juvenile in an ad.

McCain’s attempt to equate Obama with Paris in order to portray him in a negative light is even more ironic when you consider that one of McCain’s donor’s REALLY takes exception to the ad.

Who’s that donor?

Paris Hilton’s mother!

Real life is funnier than fiction.
