Red Box Movie Rentals

Anyone who knows me personally, knows I am somewhat of a techie, gadget guy. Okay, borderline geeky. I can't help it, it's my vice.

I love technology. Anything that makes life easier and more enjoyable, or work more efficient and profitable, is something that really interests me.

So I wanted to pass on a review of Red Box Movie Rentals. If you are on the East Side of El Paso, there are a couple of them around now and there will be new ones popping up all the time. So far there is one in the Neighborhood Walmart (the green Walmart as it's known by my kids) on Zaragoza/Zaragosa. There is also another one further up near Montwood at the McDonald's Restaurant, and the green Walmart on Pebble Hills and Saul Klienfeld has yet another. That one is so busy, they installed another machine the other day, so there are two lines now and it moves pretty quickly.

These are cool red kiosks that are really user friendly and you can browse through a selection of recent release movies and rent them for a buck per night. It's easy, cheap, & fast.

If you've ever been shy about renting from them, don't be. It's really easy. All you need to do is swipe your debit or credit ca

Can Blanche Darely Be Stripped of National Delegate Credentials?

An interesting story came across the internet today that got me to thinking about my last post about Hillary supporters in El Paso not really getting behind Obama yet.

This article talks about a woman in Wisconsin who may have her credentials as a National Delegate to the Democratic Party Convention stripped because she stated that she would vote for McCain if Obama was the nominee.

I've stated the need to unite and move (if you've ever received an email from me, you'll see I always close with Juntos Y Adelante) forward.

You've seen her actions at the convention here on this site in video I captured. You've probably seen the link to her quote in the El Paso Times. And you may have even seen her recent interview on television where she again repeated that she wouldn't vote for Obama.

That is fine, and it is her right as an American to vote for whomever she choses. But she shouldn't be a National Delegate to the Democratic Party Convention if she chooses to vote for McCain.

Got the perfect song for her if she gets the boot...

Obama winning over former Clinton supporters...But not here in El Paso though!

Yahoo News has this new poll that says that Obama has now won over more than half of the Hillary Clinton supporters.

I think that's a great sign considering we are in the same month that Hillary finally suspended her campaign.

But it is not happening her in El Paso. There are many people that are still holding on to hope that Hillary is going to win. If not, they apparently aren't going to vote, or they will vote for McCain. Hell Blanche Darley, (if you recall, I was the first to call her a secret Republican operative), was on television the other day still saying she won't vote for him.

This is nothing but personal bitterness and sour grapes. I mean if you are a Hillary supporter and backed her for the Presidency, the one would assume there is a certain amount of trust in her judgement.

So riddle me this Batman, if you trust her judgement enough to make her the Commander-in-Chief (and our nuclear arsenal for that matter), then why not trust her judgement when Hillary supports Obama?

Hillary and Obama, and now even Bill, have kissed and made up

Introducing A Guest Blogger...

I am pleased to introduce a special guest blogger to TheLionStarBlog.com. His name is Danny Lopez and he is from El Paso. He currently lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, but keeps close tabs on El Paso.

He is a web developer and has worked for several companies, either as an employee or contractor, including Northrup Grumman, Lockheed Martin, US AirForce, US Army, City of Cincinnati. Locally he's worked with Zia Homes (3rd largest home builder in el paso), Destiny Church, Lumenbrite and the Upper Rio Grande Workforce Development Board.

He was the author of the following posts on talent, tolerance, and poverty.

I am showcasing Danny because he is young, 28, intelligent, and represents the future of El Paso. This is the type of diversity in terms of perspective that this city needs. We had a conversation the other day and he said something that struck me as profound. He told me that El Paso needs three things to be successful, Talent, Technology, and Tolerance. That statement inspired me to ask him he'd like to be a guest writer for TheLionStarBlog.com

The Opposite of Poverty...

The opposite of poverty is justice, not wealth. This is something clearly understood by those that have truly reached Jung's Statesman Archetype. These people are no longer concerned with things you can acquire nor the accomplishments you achieve, but are completely focused on serving and more importantly serving their community.

Within our capitalistic approach to society we have been driven by bottom lines and acquisitions. Naturally this economic system trickles down to the ego of its citizens. This can be best described by Al Pacino in the Devil's Advocate.

"You sharpen the human appetite to the point where it can split atoms with its desire, you build egos the size of cathedrals, fiber-optically connect the world to every eager impulse, grease even the dullest dreams into dollar-green, gold-plated fantasies, until every human being becomes an aspiring emperor, becomes his own God, and where can you go from there?", the Devil.

So, this is what we have to work with. A bunch of self serving rats,

Tolerance

I have been highly influenced by Richard Florida's work on economic development and fostering a successful city. One of the most compelling observations is the concept of the 3 T's. Technology, Talent and Tolerance. With these ingredients in place a city can begin to grow its Creative Class.

When looking at the El Paso Downtown Revitalization Plan, you quickly start to notice that a revitalized city doesn't happen over night and truly has its roots grounded in community support. So, the first question you should ask yourself is, "Who makes up the downtown community? What is currently working in downtown El Paso? " The answer is clear. El Paso has a thriving Gay community in the downtown area. With over 6 bars and clubs that have proved to consistently sustain a crowd, the Gay Community has etched its place in downtown El Paso.

Talent

So, they say talent leaves El Paso in mass quantity. There are all kinds of terms associated with this trend felt here in the Sun City. Brain Drain, Flight of the Creative Class to name a few. How does that make those that stay feel? Do they feel less than adequate?

Hardly. A meeting called by Beto ORourke on short notice drew many of El Pasos Generation X and Y talent to the forefront. The meeting filled downtown hot spot 1914 for discussion on the future of Downtown El Paso. This is a very emotional topic right now. It is emotional because of a single phrase, Eminent Domain.

The city has threatened many downtown property and business owners with possibility of loosing their investments and having them turned ove

Greg Freyermuth Owes Me $50!

Okay, El Paso's resident Limbaugh wanna-be debuted Monday. I listened on Monday for two reasons. First, I wanted to give the guy a chance, I felt I owed it to myself to listen and see what he had to say and what he was all about. The other reason was so that people couldn't say that I havent' listened to him when I take him on.

And take him on I did. But I will get back to that in a bit.

Overall, I must say, I was incredibly unimpressed with GF. I didn’t hear anything from him that I haven’t heard from all the other angry white men on radio like Billo, Glenn Beck, Limbaugh, etc…

But I was most surprise with the fact that he seemed to be uninformed. Yeah, that’s right “Sparky”, I said you were uninformed. I, for some reason, naively thought that his show would be based on information, facts, and meaningful discussion.

Barbara Perez to Return to 1650am?

Heard a little rumor from a source that tells me we can expect to hear Barbara Perez back on air starting this morning at 10am. Not sure if the slot is 10-11am or 10am-1pm, but we'll find out today.

This could be pretty interesting...

Juarez Cartels Stage Hit at Chico's Tacos?

Heard this stupid rumor over the weekend that one of the Juarez Cartel's were going to stage a hit at the Chico's on Alameda. I received the first whiff of the rumor via text message from a friend who was forwarding it on to all the people she knew.

I called her and asked were she'd heard the rumor and said that someone had told her that they'd heard it and she just wanted to be safe.

I though, "Wow, my friend has really lost it." I know we are all worried to some degree about violence spilling over to this side of the border. But I didn't know just how deep a fear that was until I did some poking around.

I went out to one of the fine dance clubs in town and it was DEAD!!! It's a place I go to pretty regularly, so I know what time the crowd shows up.

The next day, the day of the supposed hit, I went to Chicos. It was a Sunday night and it's usually packed with people. You know the deal at Chicos, you wait around until there is an open table and then send someone to save it for you while you order.

It was a ghost town in there. The place has 48 tables (I counted). Only 21 of the ta

What's the Deal with Theresa Caballero's Blog???

So I was watching Super Star (the excuse to do a two hour Mary Katherine Gallagher skit, disguised as a movie) and it reminded me that I haven't checked out TC's Blog in a while.

I've been poking around for awhile hoping to catch TC's next outburst of lunacy. Her website, www.TheresaCaballero.com has been under construction for a very long time now. I don't think the pyramids took as long as it is taking her website.

It better be good, because it is taking a very long time. Since I happen to know a great deal about web development, I can only think of a couple of reasons why the website is taking so long.

Either she hasn't paid for it completely, or she has the slowest web designer in the history of man kind.

Of course, it may be that she's one of those nightmare clients that tells you she wants one thing, the changes her mind 500 times. Or worse yet, gives no direction and the poor web designer is feeling around in the dark trying to figure out what this lady wants.

Special Announcement About New Video Feature

I've been kicking around this idea for awhile now and I've finally decided to make it happen. I am going to do a live video blog/show on this website starting in July. It will be seen on the Extras page here on TheLionStarBlog.com.

I will also be putting some additional information on the Extras Page. I've been getting complaints about the page being empty, but to be honest, with all the writing I do and my other stuff, it's sometimes hard to do everything that I want to do.

I am taking suggestions for the best time to do this. I will invite the readers that have registered on my website to a special sneak peek and focus group activity so that I can get their feedback before going live to everyone.

I appreciate your feedback and the fact that you all continue to read. Since I have started this blog back in February, I have increased readership every month and that is thanks to you, my Loyal Readers.

If you want to be in on the sneak preview, register here and I'll make sure you are invited.

Upper Rio Grande / Lorenzo Reyes At It Again!

Lorenzo Reyes, CEO of the Upper Rio Grande Workforce Solutions is at it again. And once again, there is no one around elected to any office to hold him accountable.

He has now added a huge budget cut to his list of accomplishments while at the helm of one of the area agencies that has the best chance at doing some good in the community.

And don't get me wrong, they are doing good in the community, but despite Reyes' leadership, not because of it.

Thirty+ employees are being laid off due to the budget cuts. For some of the cuts/layoffs, it's high time. Upper Rio Grande has long been the most top-heavy board of all the workforce boards in Texas. In fact, Tarrant County is the largst board in the state of Texas in terms of budget and the number of clients they serve, and operates at 1/2 the staff of the Upper Rio Grande!

Inside sources tell me that the former CFO told Lorenzo Reyes that he could move some things around in the budget so that some of the essential staff could keep their jobs. Instead, 5 of the 6 employees in the compliance department were laid off. Compliance is the department that makes sure everyone

Blast from the Past, Jerome is Back...

“Guess who’s back, back again, Jerome is back, tell some friends”. Sorry, I jacked that line from Slim Shady.

Jerome Tighlman is back on air and probably going to spend most of his time going on and on with his big words about Congressman Reyes, or whatever office he is going to run for next. Click here for a link to an older piece I did on Jerome ealier this year when he announced he was running for Congress.

I thought KHRO was making the changes to get MORE listeners, not rehash an old host. Oh well, at least he has Lupe from the Northeast calling again and that is always entertaining. I do a pretty fair impersonation of her on the phone.

Maybe I will share it with you all one day…

Until then, please enjoy this video homage to Jerome. Most of his shows sound something like this...

SISD Raises Fees on Meals

Board members from SISD voted 7-0 to raise the price of meals for students that aren't eligible for the school lunch program.

I understand the need to do so, but as a parent with kids in Socorro ISD, I have to pay for their meals. That is fine with me, but the problem I have is the amount it's being raised and they way they are going about it.

I thought once Atkins was gone, that the bone-headed decisions would cease. Guess I was wrong again!

The fees are not across the board, but rather based on grade level. Middle schoolers and high schoolers pay more than elementary students.

That makes no sense.

It's the parents that pay for it, it's not like middle schoolers are some how more capable of paying the higher rate than their grade school classmates.

In you are going to raise the rates, do it across the board, In elementary and middle school, the meal portions are about the same, I know because I checked it out.

So paying more because you are a middle schooler is nothing more than a school district shakedown!

California Love

California legalized gay marriage and ceremonies were performed across the state of California yesterday. In fact, Sulu from Star Trek is getting in on the act and marrying his lover later this year in September.

This may be a short-lived victory for the gay community because there is an amendment to the California constitution up for public referendum that would confine the institution of marriage to heterosexuals.

But conservatives will neer be able to legislate morality, or at least their narrow, often hypocritical definition of it.

Legalization of gay marriage is not about whether or not a couple can be married in a Catholic Church or Jewish Synagogue.

It's about the legal process we have in this country. It's about restraining government from institutional discrimination.

The institution of marriage is about love and should not be threatened by people who love one another.

The greater threat to the institution of marriage is from people who hate people because of who they love.

More info on KHRO changes

Apparently Freyermuth is calling the shots over at KHRO these days. Up until yesterday, the two prime spots were going to be freyermuth in the morning drive and David K in the afternoon.

So the two prime spots on the station would be reserved for the Republicans (though David K is far more middle-of-the-road than he'd like to admit). Still think I am a consipiracy theorist?

But get this, apparently the new boyfriend is already moving in. Wow, they hardly know each other and they are already moving in together!

Freyermuth, according to my sources already has an office at KHRO!

If he's calling all the shots, sounds like he's more than just a host. Seems like he also purchased the programming and promotions director gigs as well!

David Candelaria & Abel Rodriguez on KHRO 1650am

David Candelaria and Abel Rodriguez joined Paul Strelzin on El Paso on the Move this morning to discuss the news of the pending line-up changes at 1650am. Candelaria and Rodriguez were on to give the company line of why they are making the move from a progressive station to what Candelaria hopes will be “from the right, to the left, and in the middle”. In other words, Candelaria wants it to be all things to all people.

This change has the stink of a political agenda all over it. The timing of this issue, right before a critical presidential election and a key Texas House race is at the very least, a striking coincidence. Candelaria basically said that Freymouth purchased his slot.

It is REALLY easy, almost TOO easy to rip Candelaria and Abel over their now-pointless taglines of

Republican Editor at the El Paso Times Pulls Plug on Blog Piece Re: Strelzin?

Okay, I've been called a Conspiracy Theorist for my take on the changes at KHRO being about politics and money, but mostly politics.

But just because I am paranoid, doesn't mean that I am wrong...

Wanna know why? How strange is it that Roy Ortega's blog on the subject is modified from it's original form to a more sanitized version? Here is the original blog post (someone copied it and put it on TheStrelz Forum). Look for a posting from Newshound.

Now here is the post as it is showing up on his blog now...

Check out the comments. Most of the comments look like they came from the original post. So why the change?

I don't know Roy Ortega personally, but it seems to me that a newsman wouldn't change a piece so drastically unless instructed to do so. All the politics was taken out of the piece, so that leaves me to believe that someone didn't like what was written.

LionStar's Oldest Cub & Guitar Hero

"Nala", the LionStar's oldest cub (16 years old) is in town this week. She goes to high school in Phoenix. I'm 32, so do the math, I was a statistic but she's still the greatest thing that ever happened to me.

So we are hanging out at one of my haunts, a coffee shop on the east side near El Dorado High School called the Hyper Cafe. It's a great place with reasonably priced coffee and cold drinks. They have free wi-fi and a plasma television that is hooked up to an X-Box.

My cub introduced me to my newest addiction, Guitar Hero. This is warning to all adults who may be curious about playing this game. DON"T! If you do, you may find yourself playing this thing all the time and end up homeless and without a job!

My cub and I played a few songs together (I suck because I haven't played before and she made me play Bass back-up so that we would stop losing). Just when I had I Want to Rock n Roll Allnight by Kiss and Welcome To The Jungle by GNR down pretty good (on Easy mode), some little kid who swears he's 12 but looks all of 9 years old, kicked my ass.

My cub said, "You got schooled Dad".

That's okay. I bet if we played Madden or Pac-Man, I'd kick his ass.

Again, this game will suck up all of

Major Changes in the Works @ 1650am KHRO

Okay, I am probably going to be back on the bad-boy list for this one, but since I have now heard this from more than one source, I am going to write about it.

Not sure if you have noticed David K's show has had a "farewell" tone to it lately, but I noticed. It got me curious so I did some poking and proding and have some info.

It appears that KHRO is headed for a major line-up change very soon.

IN:
Greg Freymouth, conservative personality from 6am-10am.

Moved:
Paul Strelzin, legend in local broadcasting from 10am-1pm

Out:
David K
Fernie the Attorney
Lisa D
Sito Negron

I guess they are keeping Mario Solis Marich, and it looks like Lolis may finally be out as well.
I am not sure where that leaves Hector, Gene, or Ken Hudnall.

I also hear that they may be moving over to another spot on the dial, but can't confirm exactly where but it's supposed to be a stronger signal.

This is a major change that will have major implications. Not sure if they will be good or bad, but its a huge move.

I would LOVE to hear what you all think ab

Response to Danny Anchondo, w/ Video

The El Paso Democratic Party Chair was on with Hector Montes yesterday on KHRO 1650am. I called in and had a little exchange with Mr. Anchodo due to the way he characterized the Convention.

To hear Danny tell it, we all sat around the campfire making s’mores, telling ghost stories, singing kumbayah, and spooning. As I have said repeatedly in this blog, that was far from the truth.

Maybe he forgot the fact that we had to have UNIFORMED CONSTABLES in the room to keep the piece!!!

I don’t want to continue the animosity in the party, but the way the establishment act is not only troublesome, its frustrating. I’ve been told that I sound frustrated lately and that I am letting my emotions get the better of me. You know what? They are right, I am doing that. I’ll try to do a better job.

But there were a few things that Danny said that really bothered me that I thought needed to be addressed and not go unanswered. First, his assertion that Blanche Darley had no power in the convention. HHHHHEEEEELLLLLOOOOO???? Were you even there man?

RIP Tim Russert

Tim Russert died today of what was first characterized as a heart attack and then later characterized as unknown causes.

I always admired and respect Tim Russert and his journalism. I watch Meet the Press religiously, no pun intended, on Sundays.

It's part of my Sunday ritual to watch the show while I get ready for mass. This week won't feel the same.

I hope they keep the show running though, because I don't think Tim Russert would want it to stop.

Heaven has welcomed a big Bills fan today. God Speed Tim Russert.

Joe Moody gets a few minutes to address the El Paso Delegation at the State Convention. This is one of the few times (only) that we seemed to be all on the same page.

Unity is extremely important because if we want to elect a Democrat in that district, we have to make sure that the Hillary people don't stay home. In the end, the only one that will be hurt by that is Joe Moody.

Blanche Darley Caught in the Act...Again!

As someone mentioned in a comment on a previous post, there was rule passed during the convention that essentially created a loyalty test. Each person was required to state their presidential preference, but were not allowed to address the crowd to say why they were the best candidate for the position. In other words the rule essentially said that you had to say which team you were on, but couldn’t say why you were better than the Hillary person.

Can’t blame them, they wanted to make it really easy for people in their delegation. Vote against the Obama supporter and only vote for the Clinton supporters.

So the group did also decide that each candidate had to declare that they would support and vote for the Democratic Party candidate in November no matter who he, or she, may be. (Yes, I made the motion.)

So when Blanche was up for election to the nominations committee, she refused to comply. After a Point of Order from Mike Torres, she was told she had to do so. Refusal

The Reasonable Few

I counted about 50 Hillary delegates that seemed reasonable and knew that the Obama delegation was getting hosed. In fact, a senior member of the Obama leadership team at the state level said that the El Paso Obama supporters were the most-abused delegation in the entire state of Texas.

Of the 50, only about 20 or so of them actually voted their conscience from time to time because of the intense pressure put on them by Blanche Darley and her ilk. I don’t want to give the false impression that Blanche Darley was the only person acting that way, because nothing could be further from the truth. Most of the Hillary delegation was mean-spirited, bitter, and divisive. There were just so many of them it was hard to keep track of them all, but they took their lead from the top.

Jose Rodriguez showed himself to be a courageous leader. He was visibly upset about how things were going and pleaded with the rest of the delegation, but they were following Blanche and Darley with a blood-lust mentality th

Why Am I Writing About the Convention?

Okay, I am all about unity. I’m not just saying that because the candidate I wanted to win actually won. Part of me didn’t want to write about the convention because I wanted to put it all behind me and go back to El Paso with a message of unity. But you all have come to expect me to tell it like it is, so I will. Plus, it’s imperative that you, my Dear Readers, know the truth about what happened at the convention. You expect me to give you the info you won’t get out of the media, and I intend to ensure that you get it.

It’s not enough to come home and talk unity without telling the truth about what transpired at the caucus. We have to look at the entirety of the situation.

Presidential elections have implications down the ticket and El Paso needs to know about the clowns that are running the party.

Just look at the recent win in Louisiana of a Dem

The Numbers Game

Here are the numbers for the El Paso Delegation in terms of delegates, alternates, and people who actually showed up. The Obama Delegation had 44 delegates, including Blanche’s puppy, and 42 alternates in attendance for a total of 86 out of a possible 88. This makes attendance 98%.

In contrast, the Hillary delegation had 117 delegates and 48 alternates for a total of 164 out of a possible 262. That gave them a 63% attendance rate.

Delegates attending the Democratic National Convention in Denver for:

Hillary = 4

Obama = 4

Number of Hillary Delegates that were fed up with what was going on and decided to join the Obama delegation DURING the SD Caucus = 2!

El Paso Obama Delegation Captures 50% of Delegates to Democratic National Convention

Okay, this post is a rumor-killer!

El Paso will be sending 8 delegates to the Democratic National Convention. Three came from our apportionment based on previous voting, and the rest came from selections at-large. El Paso's Obama delegation captured a majority of the at-large selections (three of the additional five).

This lead to a total of 4 Obama delegates and 4 Hillary delegates. Here's the rumor-killer part. Blanche Darley, who was on the nominations committee, DID NOT ensure that the Obama delegates were selected.

It was Norma Chavez who was the one working to make sure that Obama received additional delegates from El Paso! Only someone as familiar with the process and with the clout of a state legislator could have made it happen.

Blanche Darley, world-class Norma Chavez-hater, was stark raving mad over the fact that El Paso is sending an equal number of Obama and Clinton Delegates to the National Convention.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished!

At one point during out SD 29 Caucus, things got so bad that I thought I would try a gamble to get people to come together.

I mean we had just finished hearing every party big shot, Clinton supporters and Obama supporters, call for unity in the party. Again, I am a bigger pendejo than I thought and believed that the sentiment would carry over to the rest of the Caucus.

So I talked to a good friend of mine, and hard core Hillary supporter, Herb De La Rosa. We are both vets and support our presidential preference, but we are sophisticated enough to vote our conscience.

I walked over to Herb and told him that I had an idea. I said that I'd like to nominate him for a position and he can nominate me. The idea was to stop the madness and get people to see that we needed to get together and push party loyalty and strong Democratic turnout because Joe Moody's seat depends on it!

So I walked up to the mike and identified myself and my precinct. I was booed immediately. I thought I was at my family reunion, but that's another story.

I then said that I wanted to nominate my friend, fellow Veteran, and Clinton supporter, Herb De La Rosa.

Silence. (it confused the h

El Paso Welcomes Newest Hispanic...Ken Sutherland?

Get this, apparently Ken Sutherland is claiming to have Hispanic heritage. In the very same Hispanic Caucus that his tag team partner Blanche “White Pant Suit” Darley was passing out bootleg voting bracelets, Ken “White Shoes” Sutherland declared he is Hispanic.

At least that’s the only way I can imagine that he’d be able to vote in the Hispanic Caucus. The Hispanic Caucus is one of the largest and most-influential caucuses in the Texas Democratic Party. The only requirement to vote in the caucus and influence the agenda is to claim Hispanic Heritage.

My problem with it is the fact that to my knowledge, he’s never professed to have a Hispanic heritage. I’m flattered he wants to be one of us, but the facts are that he isn’t. He has no right to have a voice in the decision-making process of our caucus; we are perfectly capable of that ourselves, thank you very much!

The Hispanic Caucus has a right to self-determination by Latinos, Hispanics, Chicano’s, etc. Republicans aren't allowed to vote in the Democratic Primary, and I didn't hear of any Latinos voting in the

Blanche Darley Breaks Rules & Gets Caught in the Act!

The most divisive and bitter personality in the Hillary delegation, by far, was Blanche Darley. If the poisonous crew of haters (not everyone, just the poisonous haters) on the Hillary side were a buffet, then the convention was treated to a big beefy serving of Blanche Darley and her trademark white pant suit that she wore every day while at the convention.

Come to think of it, Blanche seems to be attempting to morph into Hillary. Pant suites, short-blond hair, and shrill, vindictive, win-at-all costs attitude. NEWSFLASH Blanche, Hillary dropped that game about a month and a half ago!

I cannot begin to describe how inherently evil and power-hungry this woman is. It got so bad that I played a game in my head trying to come up with a redeeming quality she possesses. No dice, I wasn't able to find any!

I don't think I actually ever saw her in person before the convention, at least that I can remember. But I recognized her by her demeanor and propensity to break the rules.

During the Hispanic Caucus we were required to sign-in and claim Hispanic heritage in order to get an identification band signifying our eligibility to vote. The Hispanic Caucus is one of

Boy Was I Wrong!!!!

Call me a dreamer, or just plain stupid, but for some reason I thought I would be writing about how the El Paso Delegation to the Texas Democratic Party State Convention came together in the spirit of unity, re-energized with the intent of electing a Democrat to the highest office in the land.

I must say, that statewide, that seems to have happened. But it sure as hell didn't happen in our delegation. There was a mean-spirited divisive strategy pushed forward primarily by two people, Blanche Darley and Ken Sutherland.

Danny Anchondo didn't seem to be as mean spirited and divisive, but he didn't do a damn thing to reign those two in. His inaction was an endorsement of their actions.

The agenda was clear the minute the El Paso Delegation broke into our Senate Caucus. Here was the strategy. The Clintonistas were only going to vote for a Clinton supporter, regardless of ability. So they didn't want the most qualified individuals representing them at the state level, they wanted ANY Clinton supporter.

Some little guy from the Clinton side seemed to be one of their stronger operatives. This little hobbit made the first motion of the day, which was to require any person up for election to one of the positions

Bus Trip to Austin

The Camino Real Mexican-American Democrats' bus left on-time and headed out to Austin for the convention.

It was a REALLY long bus ride, but we made the most of the trip. We played spades and cracked jokes about each other.

The MAD bus was a diverse group of El Paso political activists supporting Obama and Clinton. It was a well-organized trip with snacks and refreshments for everyone.

Eventually people played musical chairs I ended up sitting next to a bright attorney, Mike Torres. Mike Torres is one of the attorneys that crafted the challenge that enabled the Obama delegation to have the appropriate number of delegates.

That guy is the funniest guy in the world. Not sure who's bright idea it was to put the two biggest and two loudest guys in the back together, but I bet we had a blast. Trust me, it's hard to make a 11 hour bus ride fun.

Though the bus had both Hillary and Obama delegates, we were united with one another on the bus.

Hopefully that is a sign of the things to come...

Note About Coverage of theTexas State Convention of the Democratic Party

I am leaving this evening for the Texas State Convention of the Democratic Party on the Camino Real Mexican-American Democrats (MAD) charter bus.

My plan is to blog DURING the convention as it progresses. However, I don't know what the internet connectivity situation will be like there during the event, so if I am not able to post during the convention, I will post from the hotel. I have no idea what time we'll be back at the hotel, so keep checking in.

The plan is to do some writing, podcasting, interviews, and maybe some video podcasting or video interviews. Of course, I plan on drinking large sums of alcohol, so hopefully I won't forget! Just kidding.

It's a 10-12 hour bus ride, so I may end up doing interviews and podcasts on the bus of the some of the various delegates and alternates. I'll be interviewing both Obama and Clinton delegates.

But seriously, if you all have any ideas, suggestions, or specific things you'd like covered, let me know and I will try to gather some content for you all.

The Hillary Picture

Talked with Paul Strelzin in the morning and he said that he had a lot of people call and ask him if I doctored the picture of Hillary Clinton.

The answer is no, I didn't. It may in fact be a doctored photo, but I didn't do it. I googled her name in google images and found that picture there.

If you google it and find the pic, you might be able to find out if it was doctored or not. I honestly don't remember where I got it from.

I will say this though, you will see a bit of a change in my criticism of Hillary (as long as she cools her jets and stops with the negativity). I am going to walk the talk. I've called for unity and the best way to convince others that its the right thing to do is to start with my own actions.

We need to focus on McCain and as I have said many times, Hillary is a formidable candidate and would make a good choice for President. She just wasn't my first choice.

It may end up being that Obama is pressured into selecting Hillary as the VP. If so, I will support the ticket. I've laid out why I think she wouldn't be the best choice for the job (still not backing down from that), but I'm just a regular guy and not a hot-shot Washington consultant, so what do I know?

Hillary Still Hangin’ On!

Even after a momentous evening in which Barack Obama secured the number of delegates required to be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States, Hillary Clinton still refuses to end this long and bloody campaign. Hillary showed herself too prideful to admit defeat and wish her opponent well in the general election.

Wonder why Hillary supporters aren’t rallying behind Obama? Maybe it has to do with the fact that their candidate is not setting the example. Rather than uniting the party after she’s clearly lost, Hillary continues the slash and burn politics that have become her brand.

How the hell do Hillary supporters not support Obama in the general election? Many experts and even KHRO’s resident wanna-be expert (and fervent closet Hillary supporter, Mario “Quite Frankly” Solis-Marich) have said that Hillary and Obama are nearly identical on most policy positions. If that’s the case, then the only reason a Hillary supporter would turn and support McCain would be sour grapes.

Party Unity in El Paso?

Now that the race is winding down, it will be very interesting to see if all the old guard Democratic party establishment people really practice what they preach and get behind Obama.

Personally I can't wait to see people like Danny Anchondo, Ken Sutherland, and Blanche Darley wearing Obama buttons!

But maybe I am just cynical, and I hope I am wrong, but I just don't think they will get behind Obama.

If Hillary decides to run as an Independent, it'll be pretty interesting to see what those three do...

The Strelz

It's okay. You can admit it. There's nothing wrong with talking about it in public. Don't be ashamed.

In fact, I'll say it with you...

I MISS THE STRELZ BOARD!!!

I love for everyone to read my blog, but let's face it...we all go to the strelz forum at least once a day.

Okay, okay, I check it several times during the day. Sometimes several times during an hour.

I talked to El Paso's favorite Colin Powell look-alike, aka the Strelz, today and he told me that he was disappointed it was down and hoped it would be up and running again soon.

I hope his foot gets better so he can be up and running again soon too. Okay, so neither of us are runners.

But we can sure run our mouths BABY!!!

Get well soon Big Guy!
